- Learning about Strata-East
Music Label Strata-East profiled in new piece from NPR's Jazz Night In America I'm a music sponge with my ears open for anything I might not have heard before, and some of my favorite works of inspiration have come from American music labels like Blue Note, Concord, WarnerBros and Sunnyside. But I hadn't heard of Strata-East until catching a recent NPR 50th Anniversary profile. Formed in the 70's by pianist Stanley Cowell and trumpeter Charles Tolliver, Strata-East was one of the first to give its artists control over their music - a novel concept at the time - but one that had a lasting impact on musicians for years to come and helped pave the way for revolution within the industry. - Why? Because I said so.
I'm watching Yellowstone and rethinking communication... The creators of the TV series Yellowstone on Paramount+ tapped into a goldmine of family dynamics, and I'm here for it. As a fan, I'm intrigued by the growly-gruff Costner and constant drama, but one of the main things that sticks out for me is the constant befuddled mess of communication problems between parents and kids. It's kind of like Succession...with more horses. Yellowstone, like Succession, is effective in showing how filial duty comes with problems that require complex solutions. The Dutton kids fall over themselves to live up to their father's expectations of undying loyalty, while receiving little support or encouragement. It's a "Why?" / "Because I said so" kind of world, and makes me realize how important it is to think about how we talk to one another. All the metaphors and speeches make for great acting moments, but damn, what a plethora of miscommunications! Watch Trailer:
- Mic Review: CAD e100s (UPDATE)
So I finally picked up a CAD e100s Of course, it’s been officially retired from CAD's product line, so you can’t buy it new. The one I got doesn't seem too noisy*, and captures warm, smooth vocal characteristics I don’t always find with my Neumann TLM 103. I noticed more of a bass presence without the high-pass filter, but liked it, and with some help from an audio pro, this thing is sounding damn near perfect. Now whenever I record with this mic, it sounds like someone is adding a little bit of vinyl crackle - subtle but effective. * A few years ago, CAD issued returns on “noisy” versions of this model, but used models are still available. Pros Impressive sound and simple user interface Versatile and effective Affordable ($500-$600 range) Built-in -10db PAD switch and bass rolloff Cons Still a bit noisy at higher gains Shock mount isn’t easily detachable UPDATE: One Year Later It's been a year of using my CAD e100s and, unfortunately, the noise issue only got worse. Sadly, the mic has been retired to a lonely wooden case and I don't plan on using it anytime soon. However, CAD has since released an updated, cheaper version - the E100Sx. I haven't heard anything yet but may consider this one down the line... For now though, the CAD e100s has been a bust, and I'll be sticking with the Neumann.

- Tula Tula Tula
The compact microphone for content creators The engineering teams of Soyuz and Klevgrande are on the cutting edge these days of all things awesome in audio production. They have now joined forces to create something that's making a lot of content creators happy. The Tula from Tula Microphones is a one-of-a-kind stylishly retro device that acts as both a USB condenser microphone and stand-alone recorder (8GB of memory). It's a microphone thumb drive. As a travel companion for content creators, podcasters, and, voice over artists, it exceeds expectations. I want to say this is the portable microphone I've been waiting my whole life for. As a kid, I had a thing for micro cassette recorders. Everyone in my family had one. I loved how compact it was plus you could take it wherever you went and record anything. It even acts as both a storage facility for audio files (in wav format). So you can record in the mic pattern of your choice (Omni, Cardioid, and a Lavalier option) and playback those files on the spot. But the really fascinating part? Klevgrande's Brusfri Noise Cancellation in real time. For someone who deals with a lot of city noise, this really comes in handy. However without any visual element, as on the Zoom H4 Pro for example, it is hard to edit files on the device. You can also simply connect the Tula via USB-C to your computer and use within any DAW of choice (Logic, TwistedWav, ProTools etc). While it doesn't come with a standard pop filter, a dead cat wind screen will do just fine. the PROS: Multi polar pattern modes: Cardioid, Omni, and Lavalier extension (included with purchase) Active Noise Cancellation using Brusfri from Swedish plug-in designer Klevgrande. Foldable/detachable stand + case makes for easy traveling and mobility Mic mute the CONS: Connection/Stability issues (whenever connected to a computer) Lack of visual interface for playback No distinction between Input and Playback levels
- New England Whispers
Morpheus ASMR Wins YouTube He's been referred to as the "grandpa" of ASMR by some and has a huge community of followers to boot. Morpheus ASMR's videos were a pleasant surprise when they randomly showed up in my YouTube feed (I'm already addicted to ASMR as it is). I was hooked immediately by his calming Massachusetts accent, kind demeanor and a plethora of meals that had my mouth watering. Seems like this grandpa (Thomas Clery is his real name) isn't disappearing anytime soon. I'm thankful for that. If you're looking for a nice distraction from worldly chaos, visit his channel.
