Mayor of Kingstown Composer creates score on location

I love behind-the-scenes footage of films and television shows. It offers a glimpse into how all the creative elements synthesize and bring a piece of work to life. A video popped up in my feed recently about the making of the score for the hit series Mayor of Kingstown now out on Paramount+. As a fan of the show, the music instantly drew me in and captured the dark reality of the world of Kingstown. Even more fascinating was how composer Andrew Lockington was able to achieve this sound:

By Using the prison film location as an instrument. Watch the video below to see how this idea unfolded.

    Learning about Strata-East

Music Label Strata-East profiled in new piece from NPR's Jazz Night In America

I'm a music sponge with my ears open for anything I might not have heard before, and some of my favorite works of inspiration have come from American music labels like Blue Note, Concord, WarnerBros and Sunnyside. But I hadn't heard of Strata-East until catching a recent NPR 50th Anniversary profile. Formed in the 70's by pianist Stanley Cowell and trumpeter Charles Tolliver, Strata-East was one of the first to give its artists control over their music - a novel concept at the time - but one that had a lasting impact on musicians for years to come and helped pave the way for revolution within the industry.

    Ear Catching Remixes: So Wylie

    Staying inspired on busy days

As a freelancer, I need to stay active and keep my work flow in check. It's hard to find the right mix to keep the day flowing. So Wylie is an NYC music producer, composer, and sound designer who, in addition to putting out a lot of great audio production content on the YouTubes, is an inspiring artist herself.
