Transit Dreams Become Reality

Transit Dreams Become Reality Remember when I first wrote about having a thing for trains?  I’ve certainly written my fair share of blog posts about them, but this time it’s different (I swear!).  When advancements in transit technology have a hand in potentially delivering something beyond the wildest dreams of the masses, it always seems anything is possible. I first heard of the Hyperloop a few months ago as it was proposed by rising tech giant, Elon Musk – part of the SpaceX program.  Since then, other companies like Hyperloop One have followed suit and begun work on their own system. What exactly is it?  That’s where this gets so much cooler than “just train stuff”… Ok, imagine an intricate system of tubes similar to highways, connecting cities throughout the world.…

Future Trains Make Heads Spin

Future Trains Make Heads Spin The Next Generation of Amtrak Acela Trains Is Worth A Look As you may know already, trains are an important part of my life.  I grew up fascinated by them, rode them constantly and watched them at any chance I got.  Today, I continue that same passion for the rails and even with a bit more fervor than before.  Seriously, I’m nuts about the rails.  So when Vice President Joseph Biden recently revealed new federal financing for additional Amtrak Acela trains, I couldn’t have been happier.  And when I discovered Amtrak’s plans to do a complete overhaul of their high speed trains, I jumped for joy.  Train travel in America is really no laughing matter, as we are still behind…

Moving America Forward

Moving America Forward …with new trains! (Let’s hope) We’ve been saying this for years.  America needs better trains. As many of you are aware, I live and breathe trains and will stop at nothing to talk about them any chance I get.  Whenever I post something railroad-related online, someone somewhere will say “You and your trains!”  Can I blame them?  Nope. Frankly, I’m addicted everything about them.  Both old and new types. Different locomotives, passenger and freight cars, spans of tracks heading miles into the distance, old stations, photographs, etc.  You name it.  If it involves trains in some way, I want to be involved.  And I often think of what made America classically glamorous in the past.  Passenger trains.  The New York Central, New…

Doppler Dreams

Doppler Dreams …or how the Amtrak locomotives of the past and their horns made me fall in love with trains. The Doppler Effect from Wikipedia: The Doppler effect (or Doppler shift) is the change in frequency of a wave (or other periodic event) for an observer moving relative to its source. It is named after the Austrian physicist Christian Doppler, who proposed it in 1842 in Prague. K5LA Horn   * K5LA horns, designed by Nathan Manufacturing, LLC,  were commonly used with Amtrak and various freight lines over the past several decades. If you grew up around trains in the 1990’s,  then you’ve definitely heard this horn.  Again from Wikipedia: The K5LA five-chime assembly has five bells whose musical chord helps the horn to be heard and lessens complaints.…

When Voice Over And Trains Collide..In Buffalo

When Voiceover And Trains Collide…In Buffalo As many of you know, in addition to loving voiceover, I’m a serious train addict. Marrying the two loves can be a bit of a stretch, from a branding perspective, but I have no trouble devoting equal amounts of time to both. When voiceover and trains collide, I can be seen almost always on the side-lines at stations photographing train life along the Hudson River. Well, this time I put that addiction to test by taking a much anticipated train up to Buffalo NY for the first time. In addition to exploring the historical landmarks, a somewhat chaotic tour of Niagara Falls in the rain, some great bars/restaurants as well as Art Scene, I got the chance to…
